Desde el Ayuntamiento de Lorca, Concejalía de Turismo, en colaboración con la empresa de servicios turísticos Iniciativas el Gigante sl, han puesto en marcha una actividad para el 17 de marzo, festividad de San Patricio; Patrón y Obispo de Irlanda, Patrón de la Región de Murcia, Patrón de Murcia ciudad, Patrón de la Policía Local de Murcia y Patrón de la Policía Local de Lorca.

¿Por qué se celebra San Patricio en Lorca? En el año 1945, cuando el profesor Starkie del Instituto Británico en España vino a ver las procesiones de Semana Santa a Lorca decidió pedir a las autoridades de Irlanda una réplica del Santo para la iglesia lorquina. La petición fue acogida de buen grado y en 1951 llegó la imagen para la festividad de San Patricio. En agradecimiento y a instancia del párroco de San Patricio se pidió una bandera de Irlanda para ser izada cada vez que se celebrase cualquier ceremonia en honor al Patrón de Irlanda. El 13 de abril de 1952 fue la primera vez que la bandera de Irlanda ondeó desde el balcón de las salas capitulares de San Patricio, a los acordes del himno de Irlanda; desde esa fecha se repite cada 17 de marzo.

Why coming to Lorca on St. Patrick’s Day? Since 1452, the city of Lorca has been closely bound to St. Patrick’s Day. 
On the 17th of March of 1452, a very important and historic battle took place: the Battle of Alporchones in which Christian troops fought against Muslims. This historical event was taken into account when, some years later, the inhabitants of Lorca chose the name of the Saint Patron of Ireland for the most important church in the city. Nowadays, together with the Dublin and New York Cathedrals, St. Patrick’s Collegiate in Lorca is the third of the big churches dedicated to the Saint Patron of Ireland.

What does the act consist of?
Traditionally in Lorca, the Irish flag together with the Spanish flag have been raised in the Spanish Square, where St. Patrick’s collegiate is, on the 17th of March but, since 2012, the event takes place in Calderón Square

What have we included this year to celebrate it with you?
This year we want to share this event with Irish tourists or residents in Spain by programming a special activity on Monday the 17th of March which will include:
- Raising of Irish and Spanish flags in Calderón Square coinciding with the celebration of Local Police Festivity whose Patron Saint is St. Patrick. Both National Anthem will also be played by the Local Band of Music
- Guided walk to the Spanish Square where St. Patrick’s Collegiate is (2 min. walking).
- Refreshment in the Irish Pub Phelan’s in the Spanish Square (first half pint of beer and snack free)
- In this marvellous setting, an oficial guide will explain the famous battle of Los Alporchones and tell the audience about St. Patrick’s Cathedral (both in Spanish and English)
- There will also be a raffle in which you can get the official t-shirt of St. Patrick’s Day
